We believe that providing equality of opportunity to anyone applying to college is of the greatest importance.
Unfortunately, there have been times when people have been deprived of opportunities because of the colour of their skin, their gender, their sexual orientation, their religion or because of a disability. We want to make sure that this does not happen at Borders College. For this reason, we are asking sensitive personal questions about you in this section so that we can make sure you are getting a fair chance. It will also help us to offer you services to make the most of your time at College if you need and want them.
The data you provide will be kept securely, is confidential and protected by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) EU 2016/679 and the new Data Protection Act 2018. We will use the data to ensure our services are being fair to everyone. We will share the data with the Scottish Funding Council who will treat it confidentially and will use it only for statistical purposes.
We would like you to complete all the questions in this section to help us make sure our services are fair but there are always the options to tell us you would prefer not to say.
If you have more - please tell us in the box below:
Are you a care leaver (someone who has left care i.e. kinship, Foster/Supported Carers, Residential or Looked After at home in the last 5 years?)
Household
An estranged person is someone who no longer has the support of their family due to a breakdown in their relationship which has led to ceased contact. This might mean your biological or adoptive parents or wider family members who have been responsible for supporting you in the past. Estranged students have no experience of being in care and do not have a corporate parent responsible for them
Are you a student who has a parent or carer who served or is serving in the regular or reservist British Armed Forces (Royal Navy; Royal Marines; British Army; or Royal Air Force) at any point during the first 25 years of your life?
Ethnicity
This information is required for statistical purposes and to meet the College's obligation under the Race Relations (Amended) Act 2000

For the following questions - if you'd prefer not to answer, please select 'Prefer not to say'
You must disclose any unspent conviction you may have. Disclosure will not automatically discount you from interview. The College will accept applications from individuals with a criminal record on their merits, only taking into account convictions considered to be relevant to the course applied for.
You will be required to supply details in a letter marked 'Private and Confidential' detailing the conviction(s). The content of the letter should outline the incidents(s), when it was, how it was dealt with (i.e. sentence received), explanation of circumstances at the time and what are your current circumstances.
You can find out how long it takes for a conviction to become spent by visiting the Liberty website at: http://www.yourrights.org.uk
